Carlos Ghosn and Rachida Dati in court: €900,000 at the heart of the trial

The former Renault-Nissan boss and the former minister were tried in Paris for corruption and influence peddling. At the centre of the case: fees paid between 2010 and 2012. Both deny the charges and are presumed innocent.

There was a dock, but only one defendant to sit in it. On 16 September 2026, the Paris criminal court opened the trial of Rachida Dati and Carlos Ghosn. The former minister came to explain herself. The former Renault-Nissan boss, who has been in Lebanon since his spectacular escape from Japan in 2019, did not set foot in the courtroom.

Very discreet fees

Between 2010 and 2012, Rachida Dati, then a lawyer and a Member of the European Parliament, received €900,000 from RNBV, the Dutch subsidiary of the Renault-Nissan alliance, then run by Carlos Ghosn.

According to the prosecution, these sums did not correspond to genuine legal work but allegedly paid for interventions in favour of the carmaker in the European Parliament. The defence firmly disputes this reading.

The charges

Rachida Dati is charged with passive corruption and influence peddling, and with receiving the proceeds of abuse of corporate powers and breach of trust. Carlos Ghosn is charged with active corruption and influence peddling, abuse of corporate powers and breach of trust.

“Did these fees pay for legal work, or for influence?”The question at the heart of the trial

A tense trial

Six half-day hearings, marked by Carlos Ghosn's absence and by Rachida Dati's combative defence. The national financial prosecutor sought four years in prison against her, two of them under electronic tag, plus a five-year ban from standing for election and holding public office.

The trial ended on 28 September 2026. The court will deliver its decision at a later date.

Ghosn, the untouchable

Wanted on French arrest warrants, Carlos Ghosn lives in Lebanon, which does not extradite its nationals. Yet he keeps making headlines: in June 2026, at Nissan's annual meeting, disgruntled shareholders even proposed bringing him back to the board, an idea rejected by management.

The former boss himself admits that legal hurdles make such a comeback virtually impossible.

Rachida Dati and Carlos Ghosn deny the charges and are presumed innocent unless and until a court finds them guilty.
